The benefits of Pilates

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a method of low impact body-mind exercise developed by Joseph Pilates, a German Physical trainer. These exercises target the core stabiliser muscles, bringing the body into correct alignment and improving posture, it also teaches you to use your body correctly so you can incorporate it into everyday life and activities.

Who is Joseph Pilates?

Joseph Hubertus Pilates was a German physical trainer who developed Pilates during WWI.

I'm injured. Can Pilates help me?

Pilates strengthens the whole body as well as enhancing breathing, alleviating back pain, and improving posture. It helps to relieve stress by releasing tension held deep within the muscle tissues and focusing the mind on the movements. Pilates is particularly beneficial for people suffering with chronic pain, recovering from injury or in need for rehabilitation following surgery. Pilates is increasingly used by professional athletes as well as everyday people just looking to improve their level of fitness and to help with the prevention of injury.*

What’s the difference between Pilates & Yoga?

Yoga and Pilates are both praised for their many health benefits, from offering connection to the body and stress relief, to developing flexibility, strength, control and endurance. However, while Pilates is a technique of physical fitness that integrates modern anatomical and bio-mechanical thinking, yoga is rooted in deeply spiritual practice. In fact, the asanas or postures taught in yoga classes are just a small part of the holistic and ancient system known as Yoga.

How often should I practice in order to see results?

Joseph Pilates is often famously quoted as saying "In 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 you will see the difference, and in 30 you'll have a whole new body". For most individuals, 3 times a week is a good schedule to begin to see results. You may find that as you get more comfortable with the routines and you begin to get stronger and more flexible that you will want to increase this to 4-5 times a week. The important thing is to stick with it and remain consistent over time.

Is Pilates good for dancers?

Pilates is a must for dancer because of its deep postural muscles’ exercises, flexibility, body awareness, coordination, and strength. For injury prevention, rehabilitation after injury and building strength
